Former Miss Porter's Teacher Sentenced to Prison After Pressuring Student into Sexual Relationship

A former Miss Porter’s School teacher was sentenced to 60 months of federal prison and 10 years of supervised release for pressuring an underage student into a sexual relationship.

Joseph Rajkumar, 44, has been imprisoned since his arrest in January 2014. He will receive credit for time served. He lived in Farmington prior to his incarceration

According to court documents and statements made in court, Rajkumar was a science teacher and advisor to the Science Olympiad team at the school in Farmington. He befriended a minor female victim at the school. He pressured her into creating an anonymous email account in June 2011 before summer break.

He also created an anonymous email account, which was in violation of a school policy that mandated teachers and students communicate only through the school website.

The two engaged in video chats where Rajkumar pressured the girl to remove her shirt and expose herself. She initially resisted, but eventually sucbumbed to his advances.

In November 2011 the two engaged in a sexual relationship that lasted several months and the two engaged in video chats through at least April 2012. He continued to make inappropriate comments and pressured her to expose herself.

“The investigation further revealed that RAJKUMAR had also begun to harass other young girls at the school in person and through electronic communications,” said Thomas Carson, spokesman for the United States Attorney District of Connecticut Office.

He told one female student through text that she looked “hot in pants she wore at a school event and told another she should create an anonymous email so they could do “naughty” and “secret” things.

In total Rajkumar made advances toward at least six victims and pressured at least one other girl to start a physical relationship.

Rajkumar pleaded guilty in November 2014 to one count of attempted reciept of child pornpography.

He was also sentenced to 10 years of incarceration suspended after 18 months and 10 years of probation after he pleaded guilty in state court to second-degree sexual assault.
