"George" Is Moving Out of Homelessness

Thanks To Farmington Bank!

Moving Out of Homelessness

After many weeks of waiting, Mercy helped “George” move into his one bedroom apartment in January!

George qualified for a special housing program for individuals over the age of sixty-two. Having been homeless for more than thirteen years, George was ready to finally trust someone to help him escape the hard life that he lived on the street. For the past several years he would visit Mercy’s Friendship Center Day Shelter for breakfast and lunch and to escape the elements outside. It wasn’t until last year that he started speaking with a case manager and asked for help.

George came to Connecticut in 1972 to pick tobacco, which he did for many years. During this time he was renting rooms and sharing apartments with roommates. He eventually had to stop working because of his asthma. With no income, he slept on friends couches and stayed in nearly every shelter in the Hartford area. In 2002, his name was entered into the statewide homeless management information database.

In the spirit of the holidays, Farmington Bank employees came together to donate household items for a man moving into his own apartment after six years of being homeless. Coordinated through Mercy Housing, the Farmington Bank donations were delivered in time for Christmas. Pictured delivering the home goods were Farmington Bank employees, from left, Jenny Christopher, Sylvia Banziruk, Wanita Parent, Gina Maisto, Joan Cloutier and Christine Traczyk.

We Need YOUR Help to Create........“A Place To Call Home”

Mercy’s Supportive Housing Services Program was recently approved for twenty-five NEW supportive housing apartments in Hartford and Middlesex County. Our Supportive Housing Staff utilizes every resource possible to find furniture and housewares, while facing many obstacles finding the resources to set up an apartment for each client. We need to remind ourselves that often times, our clients have little more than the clothes on their backs.

When an individual, who has been chronically homeless, is ready to move into an apartment it is vital that they have the proper household items to sustain their daily living.

Mercy’s Supportive Housing Program is looking to establish collaborations with community groups, religious organizations, businesses and clubs that would like to sponsor an individual(s) and transform their new apartment into a home. A Mercy Case Manager will work with you to provide a list of items needed and your group would then deliver the donated items and prepare the apartment to make it “move in ready” for the client. You will see first hand how your generosity and kindness has made an impact in someone’s life. Help us provide each client with “A Place To Call Home”.
