Recently, the Unionville Lions Club was represented at the Clover Pinney park summer concert series.
Ralph Tallmadge, multiple time past president and current chairman of the Unionville Lions Club redeemables project addressed concertgoers and the town as a whole.
Here is the text of the speech:
Good evening to you all. My name is Ralph Tallmadge. I have been a proud member of the Unionville Lions Club for over 50 years and current chairman of the redeemable project.
24 years ago our club started a cans and bottle collection to support the International Special Olympics held in Connecticut. At that time we raised $10,000 to help defray expenses for the Olympians who also stayed at some of our homes.
Since that time, we have continued the project in order to support many worthy endeavors here in town.
As a club, we have helped fund many projects such as a handicap equipped van for FAVARH, a Dial-A-Ride Van for the town of Farmington, and a playground for the West Woods Upper elementary School.
The Lions Club also provides annual collegiate scholarships, assistance to Services For the Elderly, aid to needy families, and this evenings concert.
Without your generous donations of cans and bottles from Unionville and the Farmington Valley none of this would have been possible. We thank you for your civic pride and responsive giving.
I would also like to thank Jim and Hank Bonini and Ed Myers who despite not being Lions Club members themselves still find the time and energy to contribute countless hours to the sorting of the redeemable cans and bottles.
I will close with a final thank you to the public-spirited citizens of the Farmington Valley. We know that it takes extra effort to drop your cans and bottles at 87 West Avon road, but please know that the money goes to support the community.
The Clover Pinney Park concert referenced was held on August 8th and featured 80s music from The Future Heavies band.
