Maker Spaces Coming to All Farmington Elementary Schools

The spaces allow for creative exploration and learning.

By January 2015 all Farmington elementary schools will have Maker Spaces that can be used as community gathering sites to promote student innovation, mentorship and creativity.

The concept called a SMARTE (science, math, the arts, reading, writing, technology and engineering) Space is a creative learning laboratory fitted with a variety of tools that encourage tinkering in small and large spaces, said Noah Wallace Elementary School Principal Kelly Sanders.

Noah Wallace received a Noah Wallace Fund grant in spring for the creation of the space.

The project supports the Vision of the Graduate goal, which includes the goal to provide space for self-direction and collaboration and the use of technology for learning.

Another benefit of the space is that it will help prepare students for Next Generation Science Standards as they move on to upper elementary, middle and high school classes.

The space will be available before and after school and for students in the Extended Care and Learning Program. It can also prove to be a beneficial space for programs such as the Leg League and Math club.
