New Assistant Principal Hired for Elementary Post

The successful candidate was chosen from a strong pool of national applicants.

Superintendent Kathleen C. Greider and the Farmington Board of Education are proud to announce the appointment of Michael Wilson as Assistant Principal of West Woods Upper Elementary School effective August 13, 2015.

After a comprehensive national search, Mr. Wilson was selected from a strong and experienced pool of candidates.

Superintendent Greider states, “The Assistant Principal search committee and our District Leadership Council worked diligently to find a leader with the knowledge, skills and leadership qualities that matched West Woods School’s culture of collaboration, high expectations and a deep care for all students. Mr. Wilson stood out throughout the search process as a strong match for West Woods School. He is a highly dedicated educator with a strong instructional leadership background. In his current position as the Math Department Chair and Math Teacher in Regional School District #6, Mr. Wilson has led efforts to implement innovative programming in mathematics and guided his department staff in rewriting the middle and high school math curricula. He is described as a compassionate and enthusiastic leader who is knowledgeable of curriculum, instruction and assessment and who promotes collaboration between and among all stakeholders.”

Alicia Bowman, Principal, West Woods Upper Elementary School, states, “I am extremely excited to begin my collaborative partnership with Michael. He shares a passion for the middle level learner and commitment to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to achieve high levels of success”.

Board of Education Chair Mary Grace Reed commended the search committee for their work in identifying such a highly qualified and compassionate educator to lead West Woods Upper Elementary School.

Mrs. Reed states, “Mr. Wilson is a highly effective administrator who embraces all aspects of Farmington’s mission, vision and core beliefs. He is committed to building strong relationships with all stakeholders while continuing West Wood’s focus on innovative and strategic improvement. The Board of Education enthusiastically welcomes Michael to the Farmington school district community.”

Upon his appointment, Mr. Wilson commented, “I am extremely honored to have been selected as the new assistant principal of West Woods Upper Elementary School. I am eager to get to know the students, their families, faculty, and staff members. I look forward to supporting the Farmington Public School’s vision, mission, and beliefs, as we enable students to become self-directed leaders of their own learning. I am excited to work collaboratively with my fellow colleagues as we keep student learning and achievement at the forefront of all of our actions.”

In his current role as Math Department Chair and Math Teacher, he has been a leader with a vision for where the district should go. His vision, innovative ideas, and dedication to education were evident every aspect of his work and his positive, calm demeanor make him a thoughtful leader who always provides a balanced approach.

Brief Bio: Mr. Wilson has taught in Region 6 for ten years, seven years in grade 6 and three years in grade 7. He was the grade 7 team leader until he was appointed to the position of Math Department Chair. Mr. Wilson earned his Master’s Degree in Science from University of Bridgeport and his Bachelor’s Degree from Trinity College. He received his middle grades math certificate from Quinnipiac University. In addition, he attended the University of Bridgeport to acquire his Educational Leadership certification.

Mr. Wilson will begin as the Assistant Principal of West Woods Upper Elementary School on August 13, 2015.
