FARMINGTON, CT — Local passive recreation options will grow and potential sprawl-inducing development opportunities will shrink after the Farmington Land Trust acquired a new parcel
The trust recently announced its second significant acquisition in recent months, 4.43 acres of wooded land located at 8535 Mountain Spring Road.

Appraised at over $300,000, the parcel was initially listed as a building lot under the address 290R Mountain Spring Road for $350,000 in 2021.
But by choosing to donate this land, Savin ensures this vital natural habitat will remain undeveloped and protected in perpetuity.
"Donating land to the Farmington Land Trust not only plays a crucial role in preserving the natural beauty and environmental integrity of our community, but it also provides significant tax benefits," wrote the Farmington Land Trust.
"When you donate land, the value of the donation is typically tax-deductible, offering you a charitable deduction based on the appraised value of the property.
"This can result in substantial tax savings while ensuring that the land remains protected and undeveloped for future generations."
This acquisition is part of a broader conservation effort by the Farmington Land Trust along Mountain Spring Road.
The organization now protects close to 100 acres in this area, which includes a separate cluster of parcels that abut the road.
Of this land acreage, 53.57 acres are owned by the Farmington Land Trust, and 33.7 acres are under conservation easements.
Evan Cowles, vice president and chair of acquisitions at the Farmington Land Trust, expressed appreciation for this donation:
“We are so thankful that David Savin donated this property to The Farmington Land Trust. The property is environmentally rich, with mostly wetlands and a small brook running through it," he said in a statement.
"Adding this piece to the backyards of the nine adjacent homes, which are on large lots themselves, gives it a critical mass of wildlife habitat that we are so happy to preserve. And remember, this habitat will now remain protected woodland forever.”
This is the Farmington Land Trust’s second major land acquisition in recent months.
In July, the Farmington Land Trust announced the acquisition of 8234 Farmington Ave., a 1.84-acre parcel donated by Stephen and Liz Kendrick.
Located on the main corridor into town from Interstate 84, this parcel, appraised at over $280,000, was preserved to ensure it remains open space forever.
The Farmington Land Trust now preserves 70 parcels of land, totaling over 300 acres.
