Unionville Doctor Named First Black Female President of Hartford County Medical Association

Hartford County Medical Association inaugurates first black female president at 225th anniversary jubilee annual meeting

M. Natalie Achong, MD, MHL, FACOG, is the new president of the Hartford County Medical Association. Dr. Achong's inauguration took place at HCMA's Annual Meeting "Jubilee" at the New Britain Museum of American Art on October 17th, 2017. Her presidency marks the first time in HCMA history that an black woman has held the title.

Dr. Achong is board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist practicing out of Women's Health StayWell Health Center in Waterbury, CT. She is a resident of Unionville, CT.

Dr. Achong received her M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. She also is an assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale University School of Medicine. She serves as president of the Connecticut Society of the National Medical Association and was an editor of the Journal of the National Medical Association and is a member of the Yale Obstetrical and Gynecologic Society.

Dr. Achong received the State of Connecticut African American Affairs Commission Woman of the Year Award and the National Medical Association Region I Physician Leader of the Year Award. She serves on the State of Connecticut African American Affairs Commission advisory council for health and is a charter member of the World Affairs Council of Connecticut, Global Woman’s Issues Forum. Dr. Achong was elected to the National Medical Association board of trustees and is a member of the multi-cultural training committee at the State of Connecticut Office of Minority Health.

Also inaugurated to the board of HCMA on October 17th were Mario Cohen, MD as the Vice President and Khurman Ghumman, MD, as the Secretary- Treasurer. Dr. Cohen is an OB/GYN at Greater Hartford Women’s Health Associates and resides in West Hartford, CT. Dr. Ghumman practices Family Medicine at East Granby Family Practice. He lives in East Granby, CT.
