Monday, January 22

Varsity Basketball vs. Berkshire: L 37-54

Recap: Porter's traveled to Sheffield, MA to take on the Bears, last years NEPSAC Class B runner-ups. Despite shooting poorly from the field Porter's battled in the first half going into the locker room down 20-24. Berkshires energy and execution in the second half was too much for Porter's to handle allowing them to take control of the game. Ana Bartkiewicz '20 led the team with 12 points while Callie Godfrey '20 chipped in 10 points.

Also contributing was Kyla Gallagher '20 (5 points), Delaney Nwachukwu '20 (4 points), Lila Conners '20 (2 points) and D'Vine Straughter '21 (2 points).

Varsity Basketball vs. Choate: L 44-50

Recap: After last years OT loss to Choate, Porter’s came out strong and ready to play Wednesday afternoon. Despite Choate’s pressure Porter’s kept their composure and headed into halftime with a 5-point lead. With the momentum still in their favor Porter’s was able to jump ahead by 10 but after giving up a couple 3’s was not able to maintain the lead. Both teams battled back and forth for the lead with Porter’s falling to Choate 44-50.

Callie Godfrey ’20 and Delaney Nwachukwu ’20 led the team with a combined total of 35 points and 17 rebounds. Also contributing was D’Vine Straughter ‘21 (4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal), Ana Bartkiewicz ’20 (2 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assist), Sarah Zukowksi ’19 (2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assist), Kyla Gallagher ’20 (1 point, 3 rebounds, 7 assist) and Lila Conners ’20 (3 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 steals, 1 block).

Porter’s played great team defense forcing 18 turnovers and won the battle on the boards with 43 rebounds.

Varsity Ski @ Ski Sundown: 7th Place

Recap: Porter's Ski Team posted strong results against Loomis-Chaffee, Taft, Ethel Walker, and Forman yesterday, with freshman Marjorie Plants capturing 7th place overall and 3rd place for the female finishers. Additional varsity skiers placed in 34th place: Captain Martine Ma '18, Pia Davis '21 in 35th place, Rania Notowidigdo '21, 43rd place, Haley Baum '20 in 44th place, and Cricket Barnes '19 with a tough first run and better results in the second race.

Varsity Squash vs. Williston Northampton: W 7-0

Recap: Porter's athletes have been traveling near and far for InterMission, so the team has had an extended break from competition. Having the team back together for a home match today seemed to motivate players to play their best. Porter's took the match 7-0.

At #2, Lydia Gambacini '19 had her endurance tested in a challenging five-game against her opponent, Amanda Shen. After losing the first game 10-12, Lydia returned to the court prepared to play to her strengths, and she won the second game 11-7. Lydia lost the next game 9-11, but she was not discouraged. Rallying in the fourth, she won 14-12. In the final game of the match, Lydia capitalized on skillful placement and took the game 11-7.

Playing #3, Anya Lord '19 struggled in the first game to find her rhythm and competitive headspace and lost 5-11. Knowing that she had more effort to give, Anya found her focus and won the second game 11-8. After dropping a close third game 9-11, she reached deep to find her energy and strength, and she came back to win the next two 11-4, 11-6.

Varsity Swimming & Diving vs. Canterbury: W 75-22

Varsity Swimming & Diving vs. Cheshire Academy: W 61-36

Varsity Swimming & Diving vs. Ethel Walker: W 75-22

Recap: Porter's Varsity Swimming traveled to Ethel Walker on Wednesday 1/24/18 for a triple dual meet with Ethel Walker, Cheshire Academy and Canterbury. Porter's started off the meet with a first and third place in 200 Medley Relay. The winning relay was Avery Metcalfe '19, Marissa Chow '20, Maggie Menendez '18 and Maddie Beaule '21 and the third place relay was Emma Donlan '18, Annie Wertheimer '18, Hannah Brookes '18 and Sarah Mende '20. Beaule '21 captured second place in the 200 Free and Chow '20 grabbed a win in the 200 IM. To end the forst half of the meet Brookes '18 won the event with a lifetime best time in the 50 Free.

The second half of the meet started off with a bang as Moira Lee '19 took first in the 100 Fly while team Menendez '18 tool 3rd place. Mwtcalfe '19 continued the winning streak by taking first in the 100 Free. In the 5oo Free Beaule '21 took second and Mende '20 touched third. The Porter's swimmers continued to step it up with first and third place in the 200 Free Relay. The first place relay was Beaule '21, Metcalfe '19, Brookes '18 and Chow '20 and the third place relay was Wertheimer '18, Lee, '19, Menendez '18 and Alexia Sanabria ''20. Porter's continued the meet with Metcalfe '19 grabbing first place in the 100 Back while teammate Donlan '18 took second. Chow '19 won the 100 Breaststroke and the 400 Free Relay of Donlan '18, Menendez '18, Mende '20 and Lee '19 ended the meet with a second place in the 400 Free Relay.

Saturday, January 27

Varsity Basketball vs. Ethel Walker: W 61-55

Recap: Porter’s snapped a 3 game losing streak with a win over Founders League opponent, Ethel Walker 61-55. Porter’s shot 48% from the field (23-48) and 50% from behind the arc (5-10). Sophomore Callie Godfrey led the team with 14 points (8 rebounds, 2 assist, 4 steals, 4 blocks). Julia Teti ’19 came off the bench ready to play having her best game of the season with 13 points (1 rebound, 1 assist).

Also chipping in was Delaney Nwachukwu ’20 (13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal), Kyla Gallagher ’20 (8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assist, 3 steals) Ana Bartkiewicz ’20 (7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assist), Lila Conners ’20 (4 points, 7 rebounds), Sarah Zukowksi ’19 (2 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal) and D’Vine Straughter ’21 (2 rebounds, 1 assist).

Porter’s won the battle on the boards once again 48-36 and held their composure in the second half.

Varsity Squash vs. Millbrook: W 4-3
Recap: After a long drive into New York, it wasn't clear how the match would go against our friendly Millbrook opponents. It proved to be an entertaining match, as nothing was decided until the last few moments of play.

With evens playing first, #8 Maia Leibowitz '19 defeated her opponent in three, while #4 Anya Lord '19 and #2 Lydia Gambacini '19 both lost in three. Meanwhile, #6 Jenny Wu '19 lost her first two games but turned it around to win the next three.

As the odds went on the court, the official match score was 1-2. #7 Sarah Wagner '20 took her match in three decisive games, while #3 Shushu Fang '18 lost hers in three. With #5 Gaelen Carroll '18 splitting the first two games and #1 Talia Welker '19 winning the first but dropping the next two, the match score was now 2-3 and it looked like the match was leaning towards Millbrook. Gaelen dialed up her strategy and took the third and fourth games to win 4-1, tying the match at 3-3.

On court #1, Talia battled her Millbrook opponent, who placed shots with beautiful precision. Talia pinpointed a strategy that played to her strengths and took the fourth game. In the fifth, it was back-and-forth with most points until Talia pulled ahead to 9-6. Her opponent inched back up, however, and they continued to trade points until 11-11, when Talia stamina gave her just enough advantage to take the final two points and win the game 13-11, sealing the 4-3 win for Porter's.

Varsity Swimming & Diving vs. Kent: W 96.5-72.5
Recap:Porter's Swimming and Diving wins their fourth meet in a row on Saturday. Porter's had a strong showing against Kent. The meet start off with Avery Metcalfe '19, Marissa Chow '20, Moira Lee '19 and Maddie Beaule '21 taking 1st place in the Medley Relay while teammates Emma Donlan '18, Annie Wertheimer '18, Hannah Brookes '18 and Drew Spero '18 capturing 2nd place.

Porter's swept the 200 Free with Sarah Mende'20 taking 1st, Emma Green '21 placing 2nd and Alex Poole '20 grabbing 3rd. Metcalfe '19 took home 1st in the 200 IM while Beaule '21 took second. The upperclassman swept the 50 Free with Lee '19 in 1st, Brookes '18 taking 2nd and Wertheimer '18 bringing it home with 3rd. The diviners end the first half of the meet with Ella Warner '20 taking first and Alice Groomers '21 taking 3rd.

Chow '20 took home 1st the 100 Fly with a best time while Donlan '18 placed 2nd and Alexia Sanabria '20 bringing it home with 3rd place. Freshman Beaule '21 was 1st in the 100 Free with Wertheimer '18 in 2nd followed by Green '21 in 3rd. In the 500 Free Lee '19 won the event while teammates Poole '20 took 2nd and Mende '20 with a close 3rd. The team of Metcalfe '19, Beaule '20, Brookes '18 and Chow '20 won the 200 Free Relay while Wertheimer '18, Spero '18. Edgren '18 and Lee took 2nd. Metcalfe '19 continued the meet with 1st place in the 100 Back while Donlan '18 took 2nd.

Everyone was on their feet for the 100 Breaststroke. Marissa Chow not only won the event but as broke the 8 year old Kent Pool Record with a 1:09.01. Mari Vargas Lacouture '18 placed 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke as well. The meet ended with the Senior relay of Hanna Edgren '18, Donlan '18, Spero '18 and Brookes '18 taking 1st place in the 400 Free Relay and teammates Mende '20, Green '21, Anna Murray '19 and Sofie Brandt '19 capturing 2nd place.
