Annika Philomin '19, Veronica Pereira '19 and Jolie Nguyen '21 each won their singles convincingly, all three taking only 2 games against their opponents to achieve a successful outcome. This afternoon gave us the opportunity to play some new students in their first competitive doubles matches. Both Bonnie Ko '21and Enna Lee '22, with their respective partners Roanna Zou '19 and Simrat Khalsa '19, played some very good badminton and the girls really stepped up to the challenge.

Recap: On a windy afternoon Porter's Varsity Soccer traveled to Loomis Chaffee to take on last years Class A New England Champions. With only 14 healthy squad members the team knew that staying organized and focused would be a key component to success. The first half saw Loomis create a few chances and have more of the ball; the back line and keeper, Jenna Hall '20, stayed connected and rarely offered a lot of space in the defensive third. Throughout the first half, the girls in green had opportunities to attack in numbers but the final pass let them down. With a minute left in the first half, Laura Gouvin '20 picked up the ball in midfield, took a touch and then beat the keeper from 30 yards to send the team 1-0 up at the break. Being patient in midfield (without the ball) and executing the right pass to break the lines was the main message at halftime and the girls responded. On a number of occasions, Kyla Gallagher '20 and Carlyn Kosienski '19 found themselves 1 v 1 and started to cause problems. Marjorie Plants '21, Taylor Hall ’22 and Gouvin '20 showed a lot of energy in supporting the forwards. 18 minutes into the second half Gouvin '20 played in a corner that Ana Bartkiewicz '20 touched to Gabby Owens '19 who turned and volleyed the ball into the corner of the goal. At 2-0 Porter's Soccer continued to look dangerous on the counter and Gouvin '20 threaded a ball through to Kosienski '19 who fired over the bar when through on goal. Shortly after Sam Halligan '21 picked up the ball and took two touches before releasing Kosienski '19 who composed herself before hitting the back of the net and making the game 3-0. Hall '20, Katie Konin '19, Owens '19, Meghan Keating '20, Shayla Procanik '19, Lauren Schramm '20 and Bartkiewicz were superb defensively and set the platform for the team to counter and exploit the space in the final third.
Varsity Volleyball vs. Taft: L 1-3
Recap: Porter's Varsity Volleyball lost to Taft 1-3. Porter's started the first two sets off strong with an early lead, but ultimately Taft persevered and came back to win 22-25 and 21-25. Not willing to give up yet, Porter's held strong and won the third set 25-21, but was unable to sustain the momentum in the fourth set, losing 10-25. Ellen White '19 led the offense with ten kills, followed by Sofia Barth '19 with eight, and Lucy Taglich '19 with five. Astrid Lipkins '21 again led the game in aces with a total of three. Victoria Lima '19 provided the team with a few digs and great serving.

Varsity Badminton vs. Emma Willard: W 7-0
Recap: A great day of competition was had by all this afternoon and we were delighted to be joined by parents to celebrate senior day in the gym. Porter’s came out strong in the singles and games were won swiftly and efficiently by the girls. There was stiffer competition in the doubles and the parents were entertained by some thoughtful and energetic play. Well done to Elle Langsing '22 and Joy Yu '22 who played together unexpectedly for the first time and secured a win.
Varsity Cross Country vs. Ethel Walker: W 20-39
Varsity Cross Country vs. Westminster: W 25-33
Recap: Porter's Cross Country team traveled to Westminster School to race against Westminster and Ethel Walker. Westminster has a challenging and hilly course, but, despite that, the Porter's team prevailed, beating both Westminster and Ethel Walker. Alexandra Poole '20 finished first overall, beating the second place runner by about thirty seconds. The rest of our first five finishers were Teagan Quinlan '22, Marisol Carty '19, Lydia Gambacini '19, and Sofia Olivares '20.
Varsity Soccer vs. Convent of the Sacred Heart: W 1-0
Recap: On parents weekend Porter's Varsity Soccer recorded 35 shots vs. an organized and hardworking Convent of the Sacred Heart team. Porter's controlled much of the game and attacked with pace during the first half. The home team took advantage of space out wide and served in a number of dangerous crosses that were wasted due to a lack of attacking intent and anticipation. With 5 minutes to go in the first half, Laura Gouvin '20 took the initiative and beat three defenders before playing the ball into the six-yard box where Sam Halligan '21 was on hand to volley the ball into the corner. The second half saw the girls in green enter the attacking third constantly, but poor finishing and efficient goalkeeping kept the score at 1-0. Defensively Porter's were aware of the counter and restricted the opponents to a few long-range efforts.
Varsity Volleyball vs. Hopkins: L 2-3
Recap: Porter's lost 2-3 to Hopkins in an emotionally charged game on Family Weekend. After Porter's won the first two sets, Hopkins battled back to win the next two. The final set was a roller coaster that started with Porter's in the lead, but ultimately Hopkins battled back to to the set 13-15.
