Weekly Recap: 4/23-4/28

Scores and highlights from April 23 through April 28.

Monday, April 23
Varsity Crew @ Petit Cup
Recap: It was a great first day of racing and a beautiful event all around. The team is excited to have their first race under their belts and begin to chip away at the technical and physical demands of the sport. Many of our crews raced the course twice to face off against Farmington in the 4+ events as well as racing in the 8+. Our 1V's each took home a commanding win in the varsity events, Farmington in the 8+, and Porter's in the 4+. The tiebreaker for the cup was the 2V 4+ event where Farmington just edged out Porter's in the final 200m of the race.

Varsity Golf vs. Taft: L 1-4
Recap: On an ideal day for golf, Porter's set out for their third day of match play in the young season, but ran into a buzz saw at the Watertown Golf Club. Taft played a wonderful match. Case in point, their #4 posted 4 pars and 2 bogies. That said, Porter's improved throughout the afternoon, posting better scores on the last 5 holes than the first 4.

Varsity Lacrosse vs. Taft: L 2-15
Recap: Porter's faced a talented Taft team yesterday afternoon. While the score may not reflect it, Porter's has a lot to be proud of. Our defense was rock solid, coming up with stop after stop, some highlights were Audrey McMillian's '20 many runs from coast to coast with the ball and Victoria Lima's '19 excellent body defense. In the midfield Porter's dominated the draw, whether it was Lila Conners '20 or Merritt Hall '19, they consistently could pull or push it right to Natalie Godoy '21 or Ana Bartkiewitcz '20. Cricket Barnes '19 added another goal for the season and Bartkiewitcz '20 added a second.

Varsity Softball vs. Taft: L 2-12
Recap: Porter's Softball traveled to Watertown to take on a tough Taft squad. After starting the game with a beautiful series of at-bats, a walk to Juliana Diamantis '20, a sacrifice bunt by Gaelen Carroll '18, and an RBI base hit by Jess Sardilli '19, we settled into the game. Taft came back with a run in the first and added another in the 3rd. Porter's tacked on one run in the 4th but left bases loaded without another run. The 4th inning was when Taft really caused the damage--scoring 6 runs on only 3 hits but several Porter's defensive errors. Sardilli '19 was hit with a come-backer and had to leave the game with a bruised hand. Guilmartin '21 stepped into the circle in the 5th, but Taft quickly scored 3 and won in 5 innings, 2-12 on the mercy rule.

Varsity Lacrosse vs. Wilbraham & Monson: W 9-8
Recap: Porter's faced off against Wilbraham on a wet Wednesday afternoon. Wilbraham came out strong scoring the first 2 goals of the game. Porter's answered back with a 6-3 lead by halftime. The second half was a lot of back and forth between both teams, most of the game being played in transition. With 6 Porter's players scoring throughout the game we did a good job putting the ball in the back of the net. Lila Conners '20 scored 3, Meg Keating '20 scored 2, Adi Jalinskas '18, Cricket Barnes '19, Elizabeth Muller '19, and Ana Bartkiewitcz '20 each had 1 a piece. Natalie Godoy '21 and Conners '20 dominated the draw accounting for 12 draw controls. Sofie Brandt '19 recorded 5 saves on the day.

Friday, April 27
Varsity Lacrosse vs. Cheshire Academy: L 9-15
Recap: On another cold and wet afternoon Porter's faced Chesire Academy, the team came out flat and had a rough start to the game, it was 1-8 at half. Porter's turned it on at the start of the second half and did their best to stay in the game. Lila Conner's'20 had an outstanding game scoring 6 goals, Adi Jalinskas '18, Ana Bartkiewictz '20, and Meg Keating '20 had 1 each. Sasha Provost '21 played the second half in goal earning 8 saves.

Saturday, April 28
Varsity Softball vs. Loomis: W 19-9

Varsity Tennis vs. Hopkins: L 0-9

Recap: The squad traveled to Hopkins on a truly beautiful Saturday. While Hopkins proved too powerful in every match, the Porter's players worked hard on their goals while playing the strong competition. Audrey Palmeri '18 and Sarah Wagner '20 (#1 doubles) played the closest match of the day. With focus and skill, they stayed traded games with their opponents until 4-5, at which point the Hopkins duo pulled ahead and took the match.

Varsity Ultimate @ NMH Tournament
Recap: Porter's made the trip to Gill, MA for the Northfield Mount Hermon Ultimate Tournament. The team was facing difficult circumstances due to prior commitments, and brought only 8 players, with only one player available for substitution. It was going to be an uphill climb the entire day. Even so, the Porter's crew played with guts and determination and came out 1-3 for the day.

The first match was against Longmeadow, and Porter's picked up a solid win, 8-4. The team had goals by Olivia Luppino '18 (3 goals), Shamreethaa Seeniraj '21 (2 goals), Julia Gardow '21, Emma Kadziolka '21, and Dasha Sapronova '20.

Then they faced Needham and lost 3-7, with goals by Gardow '21, Seeniraj '21, and Luppino '18.

Match 3 was against the combined Deerfield/Willison team, and Porter's lost 2-5, with a goal by Luppino '18. Unfortunately, during this match Jolie Nguyen '21 was injured, leaving the team without a single player to sub, and another match to play after an already long day of Ultimate.

For the fourth match, they faced off against the combined teams of Pioneer Valley Performing Arts and the Chinese Immersion Charter School. An exhausted Porter's starting line had to play the entire game without a break and still managed to score 3 goals, from Gardow '21, Luppino '18 and Seeniraj '21. In the end, they lost 3-9.

I'm incredibly proud of how the team played in very difficult circumstances, and that's exemplified by the 2 Spirit Awards they received from Needham and PVPA/CICS. It was a determined effort in a very long day of competition.
