Weekly Recap: 9/15-9/20

Monday, September 15
Varsity Soccer: L 0-1 to Wilbraham & Monson
Recap: Porter’s lost 1-0 in the first away game of the season, against a quick and dynamic WMA team. Porter’s felt the pressure early on in the game,but gained confidence during the latter stages of the first half. Porter’s defended with resilience and in numbers during the second half, however with 15 minutes to go WMA finally found space behind the defense and finished into the bottom corner.

Tuesday, September 16
Varsity Badminton: W 7-0 over East Hartford High
Recap: Porter’s emerged victorious in all seven competitive matches as well as two exhibition/friendly matches. Paced by co-captains Cindy Qian ‘15 and Xinyi Wang ‘15, the Porter’s squad gave no ground, shutting out the opposition with a perfect score of 7-0.

Wednesday, September 17
Varsity Badminton: W 5-2 over Simsbury High
Recap: Co-captains Cindy Qian and Xinyi Wang at #1 and #2 singles and #1 doubles continued to demonstrate tremendous leadership both on and off the court. These two highly dedicated and talented athletes provided three of the five wins for Porter’s in their decisive win over Simsbury today. Porter’s also received wins from #3 singles Rachel Song and #2 doubles Rachel Song ‘15 and Ariane Cheng ‘17.

Varsity Field Hockey: L 0-4 to Williston-Northampton
Recap:From the first whistle, the Porter’s defense was in the thick of it. Williston earned 16 offensive corners during the game, scoring two goals in each half. Unable to get much going on offensive, Porter’s dug in and withstood much of the Williston attack. Highlights on the defense came from goalie Julia Moran ‘15 and sweeper Morgan St. Pierre ‘15, who both made amazing saves throughout the game.

Varsity Soccer: L 0-3 to Kingswood-Oxford
Recap:
KO looked determined throughout the game, as they tried to utilize their front three forwards on a regular basis. Ten minutes in the Porter’s defense made two basic errors which lead to an easy goal scoring opportunity for the visitors which they had no hesitation in finishing. Deep into the first half another basic error allowed KO a chance to score again, which they did with a neat finish from just inside the area. Porter’s must regroup and turn their attention to another difficult match against Greenwich Academy.

Varsity Volleyball: W 3-1 over Westover
Recap:Coming out of the gate a bit sluggish, Porter’s lost the first set and was down significantly in the second when things started to come together. Porter’s began to emerge the better team, as endurance and a commitment to relentless pursuit were needed to win long rally after long rally for four sets. The defense tightened and forced Westover into higher-risk plays to try and score. Porter’s also served very tough, earning 22 aces in the match.

Saturday, September 20
Varsity Cross Country: W 24-31 over Suffield Academy

Varsity Cross Country: L 24-33 to Taft

Varsity Field Hockey: L 0-7 to Kent
Recap: Porter’s took on Kent at their home turf field. Kent started quickly, winning several offensive corners, and eventually got their first goal in the first 10 minutes. Goalie Julia Moran and the defense battled hard, but Kent put up several more goals before the end of the first half. Together, Julia and junior goalie Maddie Tagatac ‘16 had 27 saves but Kent was just too much.
