Wendy's Saga In Farmington/West Hartford Sees Eatery's Closure, Future Uncertain
The location across from the Westfarms Mall was supposed to be demolished and a new one rebuilt, but plans may have changed.
FARMINGTON/WEST HARTFORD, CT — The longstanding saga surrounding the Wendy's Restaurant across from the Westfarms Mall in Farmington/West Hartford may be over.
But it might not.
What is known is the old-fashioned style Wendy's fast-food burger chain closed earlier this month, with the interior empty and the building devoid of the smell of hamburgers and fries.

What isn't known is what happens next at the parcel, which requires permits from both towns since the West Hartford/Farmington line bisects the lot.
The future was not in question in April 2024, when the West Hartford Plan and Zoning Commission voted in favor of special permits to allow for the demolition of the structure and the construction of a new, smaller Wendy's building on the same site.

The Farmington Planning and Zoning Commission had said "yes" to the plan in 2022, with West Hartford taking longer due to some regulation hurdles and a heavy permit backlog.
But since that approval, the old-style restaurant from the 1980s stayed open until this month, and no plans have been filed with either town to actually carry out the project.
Farmington Director of Planning and Development Shannon Rutherford said this week the town had no information about what was going on at the site.
She did say that no one from Wendy's has any applications before the town right now.
This particular Wendy's is owned by Inspired by Opportunity LLC, which is part of the Meritage Hospitality Group out of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Patch reached out to the company, but has not heard back. Patch has also reached out to West Hartford officials and is awaiting a response.
At the time of the PZC approvals, the owner had plans to build a new, modern box-style 2,680-square-foot Wendy's by the mall.
The building footprint would be in West Hartford, with much of the parking in Farmington, though the entire project needed approval from both towns.
While the now-closed Wendy's could seat 108 diners, the new facility would only have been able to seat 40.
The addition of a drive-through, which the former Wendy's didn't have, was expected to help keep revenue flowing despite the smaller building size.
Likely impacting the Farmington/West Hartford site was the company's decision last November to close hundreds of Wendy's restaurants nationwide.
Citing declining sales and profitability, Wendy's announced it would trim 240-360 stores from its 6,000-restaurant lineup nationwide.
