Update: West District School Briefly Locked Down After Nearby Resident Interrupts Burglary

A resident interrupted a burglary in progress at a Coppermine Road address. The lockdown at the school lasted a couple of minutes.

West District School was in lockdown for 10 minutes and then a lockout Thursday afternoon after residents saw a burglary in progress, according to police.

Police were dispatched to a house on Coppermine Road at 1:10 p.m. after receiving a report of a burglary in progress, said Lt. Colin Ryan, police spokesman.

A 26-year-old resident told police that an unknown female wearing a dark blue or black hoodie with dark pants and a dark colored backpack in the house. The suspected female burglar fled when she realized the home was occupied.

A juvenile getting off a school bus saw the female flee from the home, Ryan said. The juvenile went to a neighbor’s house and police were called.

The school was briefly placed into a lockdown state and officers quickly determined that the school was safe and that only a lockout was needed.

Officers stayed at the school and assisted with dismissal.

Detective are investigating the burglarized house for evidence.
