GLASTONBURY, CT — The Glastonbury school board has appointed Dr. Scott A. Hurwitz as its next superintendent, with the leadership change set to take effect July 1.

The Glastonbury Board of Education announced the decision Tuesday and said Hurwitz was chosen after what it described as a comprehensive search process that drew a talented pool of candidates.

Hurwitz currently serves as assistant superintendent of administration and personnel for the district. According to the district, the board selected him based on his commitment to students, leadership experience and vision for the future. The search was conducted in partnership with CABE Search Services consultant Mary Broderick, Ed.D., and included community engagement to help shape a leadership profile used in the selection process.

"Throughout the search process, Dr. Hurwitz distinguished himself as a leader who understands both the traditions that have made Glastonbury successful and the opportunities that will shape its future," said Julie Thompson, chair of the superintendent search committee. "He is a leader of rare quality with broad experience and a deep knowledge of district operations. He believes in the potential of every student. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Hurwitz elevates others. He knows how to draw out the best in people."

Hurwitz has worked in Glastonbury in a number of roles over nearly two decades, including student intern, student teacher, long-term substitute, coach, club advisor, classroom teacher, assistant principal, acting principal and assistant superintendent. Before returning to Glastonbury in 2024, he spent six years in Farmington Public Schools as assistant superintendent of finance and operations, principal of Farmington High School and principal of Irving A. Robbins Middle School. The district said his work there included overseeing a $150 million high school construction project, supporting elementary redistricting efforts and managing district operations and budgeting.

"Dr. Hurwitz is an experienced and thoughtful educational leader who understands what makes Glastonbury Public Schools exceptional," said Dr. Douglas Foyle, chair of the Glastonbury Board of Education. "His longstanding commitment to this district, strong leadership background, and student-centered vision make him uniquely qualified to lead Glastonbury into the future."

Hurwitz will succeed Dr. Alan Bookman, who is retiring after 22 years as superintendent.

"I am honored and excited to serve as Superintendent of Glastonbury Public Schools," Hurwitz said. "This district has played a defining role in my professional journey and has been home to me in one way or another for nearly 20 years. I care deeply about this community and remain fully committed to supporting our students, staff, and families while building on Glastonbury’s tradition of excellence."
