GHS Teacher Hired as New Gideon Welles School Assistant Principal

A Glastonbury High School history teacher was chosen to replace Janet Balthazar as the next assistant principal at Gideon Welles School.

The school recently hired Scott Hurwitz to serve as assistant principal at Gideon Welles under Principal Jay Gregorski.

Hurwitz taught at Gideon Welles for five years before accepting a history teacher position at the high school this year. He was one of 126 applicants for the assistant principal position at Gideon Welles, according to Superintendent Alan B. Bookman.

The position was first posted after former assistant principal Janet Balthazar was hired as the principal of Eastbury Elementary School. The Eastbury position was filled after former principal Nancy Bean was hired as the new principal of Glastonbury High School. The GHS principal position was filled after former principal Matthew Dunbar was hired as the district’s new assistant superintendent.

Dunbar was one of a group of interviewers who recommended Hurwitz to Bookman for the position.

Hurwitz received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut in 2006, and completed his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at UConn. He received his administrative degree from Columbia University.
