GLASTONBURY, CT — A South Glastonbury business Tuesday sent a stern message to parents about the behavior of some children on the property.

Hops on the Hill management said it has become not only an issue of decorum, but safety in a Facebook post. The “farm to glass” brewery is located on Dug Road.

"After several very disruptive weekends for our staff, we are reminding everyone that, although we welcome families, Hops on the Hill is a brewery for adults—NOT a playground for children," the social media post said. "Hops on the Hill is not an environment made for children; children who are well-behaved and closely supervised by parents may join us, but unfortunately, lack of parental supervision has become an issue. For a long time now, many children have been causing mayhem and destruction to our property—as well as playing in the busy parking lot (extremely dangerous), running and bumping into customers holding drinks, and so on."

Management said it was "surprised and disappointed" by "the lack of action taken by parents" after being approached about their children. Management said it was "frustrated by the disrespect."

The policy of the business is that children must be accompanied by a guardian on the property at all times, according to the post.

The rules were also posted:

  • DO NOT run around the field unsupervised, or go on the hills or into the farm barns. Recently, unsupervised children opened up a closed barn on the property and were found playing inside.
  • DO NOT go inside roped-off areas. Children have ripped out our growing sunflowers while parents stood beside them and watched. We are a working farm and areas are roped-off for a reason.
  • DO NOT run around inside OR outside where adults are sitting and relaxing. Children have been running/yelling directly next to private parties in the tent while parents watch as they disrupt guests.
  • DO NOT dig holes. They ruin our lawn and are walking hazards. Children recently dug up a drainage pipe on the property.
  • DO NOT pile up rocks outside OR inside the brewery. This is hazardous for lawn mowing and walking.

Management said it's not every kid.

"We want to recognize that there are many well-behaved children and attentive families who visit us ... We appreciate and encourage all of you who bring lawn games to play with your kids, or in the winter, bring sleds and make snowmen. We love to see families enjoying quality time together."

One person wrote: "Speaking as a parent, I wholeheartedly agree with this! I'm sorry those things have been happening."

Another person wrote: "Your establishment is a wonderful location for families when they can be together outside. I’m sorry some people had to ruin it by not supervising their kids. We just had a lovely time as a family there last week. The music was wonderful. Kids stayed outside unless (they) needed the bathrooms. We had several teens, a couple of 8 year olds and one 3 year old who was never alone. Everyone loved it. Other families joined ours."
