Glastonbury Cops Rescue Injured Owl

Glastobury police officers rescued an owl while on patrol Thursday night.

GLASTONBURY, CT — A pair of Glastonbury police officers rescued an owl while on patrol Thursday night.

The owl was discovered at 9:03 p.m. on Eastbury Hill Road near Newgate Drive, police said.

Officers Bryant Cleveland and Eric Berner managed to get the barred owl out of the road to the safety of a police cruiser. The owl had broken wings and it was likely hit by a vehicle, police said.

The owl was brought to the Bolton Veterinary Hospital by Glastonbury Animal Control Officer Leon Rhoades, police said.

According to Wikipedia, the barred owl, also known as northern barred owl or hoot owl, is native to eastern North America. Mature forests are their preferred habitat, but they are also found in open woodland areas. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals, but they are also known to prey upon other small animals such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

The owl's distinct call is a series of eight accented hoots ending in "oo-aw," with a downward pitch at the end. While calls are most common at night, the birds do call during the day as well.
