Glastonbury Extends Potential Tax Breaks For Farms

GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury has a new ordinance regarding farm tax abatements.

The Town Council adopted Ordinance 351 during its meeting of Oct. 10, 2023.

Effective for the 2023 Grand List (billed in July 2024), the Town Council expanded the property tax abatement available to certain farms delineated in Sec. 18-31 of the Town of Glastonbury Code of Ordinances. Per the Ordinance, the Town Council may abate up to 50 percent of the property taxes for the real property and outbuildings used for the purposes of the farm, provided the property is maintained as a business.

Applicants must provide the town with documentation to support the status of the farm as one of the farms delineated in the ordinance, and submit an annual application to the Glastonbury Assessor between April 1 and May 15, according to the parameters.

The application is currently being developed and will be available on the Property Assessment section of the Town website at www.glastonburyct.gov/taxrelief or in paper copy in the Assessor's Office, (located on the lower level of Glastonbury Town Hall), in March 2024, officials said.

"Farmers in Glastonbury, and throughout the country, have been negatively impacted by the severe and uncharacteristic weather patterns of recent years, and this legislation is the Town’s latest effort to support its valued farming community. By expanding this abatement, the Town of Glastonbury has now put into place all agricultural property tax exemptions and abatements as allowed by State law," council members said in an accompanying statement.
