Notable of the Month At The Cedar Hill Cemetery

Notable of the Month -James Smith (1838-1897) Born in Glastonbury, Smith came to Hartford and entered the high school, graduating in the class of 1855. He prepared for college and intended to enter, but instead secured a clerkship with William Hawes, a grain dealer. He became a partner in 1860.

A few years later, this partnership dissolved and Smith became associated with Charles H. Northam and Charles A. Robinson and established a successful wholesale flour, grain and feed business. The company dissolved in 1882 with the death of Robinson and reorganized as Smith, Northam & Co.
