Glastonbury Pet Supply Business Closing After 102 Years In Town
A popular store in Glastonbury is closing its doors after more than a century in business.

GLASTONBURY, CT — A business fixture in Glastonbury for more than a century is set to close next month.
The owners of Melzen Farm Supply made the announcement on the store's Facebook page. It has been family owned and operated since 1920, but it's time to retire, the family said in the post.
Kenny, Jimmy and John Melzen all said they were, "looking forward to retirement and life's next chapters."

They continued, "It's been our family's privilege to serve our many customers in Glastonbury and across the state over the years."
Their grandfather, Stanley Melzen, started the business after coming to America from Poland. It was then passed down to their father, Joe Sr., and then to Kenny, Jimmy and John.

It had a variety of names and locations over the years and settled into its current address at 100 Oak St. in 1980. The retail store features some of the wood from the original tobacco barn on the property.
It had most recently specialized in pet supplies.
"We have treasured being a part of this community and cannot overstate our gratitude for a successful 102 years," the owners said.
Melzen's last day in business is scheduled for Nov 12.
One person wrote on their Facebook page: "I will miss coming to your store. Your family set the bar high for feed supply stores everywhere. I have never found a comparable place. Enjoy your next chapter!"
Another person wrote, "Congratulations on retirement! We will miss you greatly. Thank you for helping us to care for our furry friends for years."
