Glastonbury Police Investigating Duplicate Business Check Scam

Several complaints have been filed about fake checks.

GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury police said they are investigating several complaints from businesses about fake business checks.

The alleged crimes have been concentrated in the areas of Commerce Street, Krieger Lane, Oak Street, and Sycamore Street, police said.

"In all cases it appears someone duplicated business checks from the businesses and successfully cashed them in the banks throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts," police said.

"It appears the perpetrators steal checks from mail boxes, make fraudulent duplicates out to their accomplices and trace issuer’s signatures on the checks," police said.

Police are advising businesses owners to:

  • Monitor their mail and promptly retrieve it from mail boxes.
  • Consider adding safety features to their mail boxes.
  • Request their banks to notify the issuer of any attempt to cash a business check by an individual at the teller’s window.
  • Notify the police if you see suspicious vehicles/persons during off hours stopping by and attempting to open mail boxes in the industrial parks.
