Glastonbury 8th Grader Places 2nd in State Geography Bee

Arjun Katechia, an 8th-grade student at Kingswood Oxford, came in second in the state in the 2014 Connecticut Geographic Bee at Central Connecticut State University on April 4. Click here for NBC30's coverage of the event.

The son of Dr. Bina Katechia and Dr. Yogesh Katechia of Glastonbury, Arjun emerged as the runner-up in the entire state of CT after surviving numerous qualifying rounds involving thousands of middle school students.

Each of the 100 contestants in Friday’s Bee had already won geography bees at their own schools. Each school champion then took a written test for the state competition; among that group, just 100 were invited to CCSU for the state Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

"In 23 years of teaching and being involved with the Geography Bee here at KO, I have never seen a student so motivated and devoted to pursuing his passion for all things Geography!" said History teacher Andy Krugman '86. "He spent countless hours studying during his spring vacation and during the school year. He should be proud of the result, but more importantly for the effort and attitude he displayed."

Arjun came in second to John Phipps from Middlesex Middle School in Darien.
