GLASTONBURY, CT — Glastonbury's Welles-Turner Memorial Library has eliminated overdue fines for most materials as part of its new fee schedule.

Through the revised fee structure, library patrons are still expected to honor due dates and to maintain accountability for items in their care. Overdue fines will not be charged for missing the return deadline on most materials, however.

Th change is consistent with "industry trends across the state," with nearly 77 percent of public libraries transitioning to fine free and nearly fine free models, officials said.

The Glastonbury Town Council adopted the new fee structure at its April 23 meeting.

The revised schedule does maintain a fee for time-sensitive and unique items such as museum passes and/or borrowable equipment (Library of Things) and remains stable for all other services the library provides, such as copying/printing charges, notary services, and meeting room rentals fees. Patrons will also be held accountable for costs associated with lost or damaged items.

"These conditions are essential to ensure community members can reasonably access the Library’s vast collection of materials," officials said.

Library Director Amy McCue said she strongly advocated for the new fee structure. She said it will increase library patronage and promote more positive customer experiences.

"I'm thrilled to introduce the new fee structure," she said. "The Library fees have not been updated for over 20 years and this new model will support more equitable access to library resources and allow staff more time to assist patrons with valuable services."
