GLASTONBURY, CT — A distinctive home perched above a historic quarry in South Glastonbury has gone on the market for $1.5 million, offering prospective buyers a combination of dramatic views, wooded acreage and an unusual connection to the property’s quarry setting.

The Howe Quarry Cliff House, at 400 Dayton Road, was listed for sale Aug. 28, according to Zillow. The single-story ranch, built in 1978, has two bedrooms, three bathrooms and 2,312 square feet of living space on a 24.94-acre wooded lot.

The property is positioned on a cliff overlooking the quarry and a pond. The listing says its elevated location provides 180-degree views that extend toward the Hartford skyline, Sleeping Giant in New Haven, the Connecticut River Valley, the Portland Bridge and the fields of South Glastonbury.

The home was recently renovated, according to the listing, with wood cabinetry, wide-board flooring, warm earth tones and extensive windows designed to take advantage of the surrounding landscape.

One of its most distinctive interior features is a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the main living and dining area. The listing says the stone used to construct the fireplace came from the quarry itself.

The primary and guest bedrooms each have stone bathrooms inspired by the surrounding landscape. The primary bedroom also includes a dressing room, full bathroom, deck or balcony access and sliders.

The home's kitchen has been remodeled and includes granite countertops and a breakfast bar, while the living room features vaulted ceilings, a fireplace and wood stove. A sunroom and multiple decks provide additional places to take in the views.

The property has three attached garage spaces and eight total parking spaces, according to Zillow. A lower-level garage provides direct access to the basement and is described as suitable for ATVs, outdoor equipment and recreational gear.

A separate bunkhouse on the property adds another recreational or guest space. The listing also highlights established trails running through the acreage, including paths leading toward the pond and along the cliffs. Other features include a shooting post and areas for outdoor recreation.

The property is served by a private well and septic system and has central air. Zillow also lists solar power and energy-efficient insulation, doors and windows among its features.

Despite its secluded setting, the listing says the property is only minutes from the village of South Glastonbury.

The property last sold in November 2020 for $625,000. It was previously listed for $799,000 in 2019 and again in 2020 before selling.
