Rep. Srinivasan Helps to Create Positive Changes for Connecticut

Supports Legislation That Protects our Health, Safety and Environment

HARTFORD – This week the Connecticut General Assembly’s House of Representatives met on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to make changes that will bring prosperity to Connecticut. State Representative Prasad Srinivasan (R-Glastonbury) supported several bills during these sessions that pertain to fracking waste, hate crimes, domestic violence, prescription drugs and marriage licenses. All bills successfully passed the House and were sent to the Senate for consideration.

Rep. Srinivasan co-sponsored the following bills:

  • H.B. 6329, which – with a limited exception for research – permanently bans collecting, storing, handling, transporting, disposing, and using hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) waste in Connecticut.
  • H.B. 5743, which increases the penalties for hate crimes, requires community service for hate crime probation and considers threats against houses of worship, religious community centers, day care centers and a person’s gender a hate crime. It also establishes a State-Wide Hate Crimes Advisory Council, hotlines for persons inquiring about or reporting hate crimes.
  • H.B. 7299, which strengthen laws concerning domestic violence by changing the standard of fear in regards to stalking and includes strangulation and suffocation. It also prohibits waivers of presentence investigations in the case of a family violence crime.
  • HB 5077, which contributes to the fight against Connecticut’s opioid addiction crisis by allowing pharmacies to accept and dispose of unused and unwanted prescription drugs.
  • H.B. 5442, which establishes a legal age to marry in the State of Connecticut by prohibiting the issuance of a marriage license to any applicant under 16 years old. A 16- or 17-year-old may only get a marriage license if the probate court where the minor resides approves a petition filed on the minor's behalf by his or her parent or guardian.

“I am happy to support not only the best interests of Glastonbury citizens, but the residents of Connecticut as a whole,” said Rep. Srinivasan. “These bills help to maintain, or even increase, the quality of life in our communities. We must continue to collaborate on these positive, supportive pieces of legislation to bring good changes to Connecticut. I hope that this spirit of bipartisan cooperation continues into the budget discussion that will happen within the next few weeks.”
