UPDATE: 34 Students, 4 Chaperones Released from Hospital Following School Bus Crash in Glastonbury

Connecticut State Police say the bus was rear-ended by a dump truck; students suffered minor injuries.

A total of 34 students and four adult chaperones from Meriden had to receive treatment at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center following the Tuesday morning crash of their school bus while traveling in Glastonbury.

The injured received treatment for whiplash and bumps and bruises.

Hospital spokesman Robert Fraleigh said, “There were 34 students who were 10- and 11-years-old and four adult chaperones for a total of 38, who were treated and released in good condition.”

The injuries were the result of the crash about 10:32 a.m. Tuesday when a New Britain Transportation Co. bus carrying the students from John Berry Elementary School in Meriden on a field trip to the Connecticut Audubon Center in Glastonbury, was rear-ended by a dump truck on Route 17 and Main Street.

Connecticut State Police are leading the investigation into what caused the tri-axle dump truck to strike the rear of the bus. State Police spokesman Sgt. Shane Hassett said Tuesday evening that the investigation is continuing and more information may be available Wednesday.

Update: 4:26 p.m.:

The Meriden students brought to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center after their school bus was rear-ended by a dump truck Tuesday morning, have been “treated and released in good condition,” a medical center spokesman said Tuesday afternoon.

A final number of patients treated following the 10:32 a.m. crash on Route 17 and Main Street in Glastonbury was not immediately available, hospital spokesman Robert Fraleigh said. Officials previously said the injuries were minor with students complaining of pain and bruises.

Connecticut State Police and Glastonbury Police are continuing their investigation into why a tri-axle dump truck rear-ended a school bus carrying 33 students from Meriden, that left six students with minor injuries Tuesday morning.

Connecticut State Police said the crash occurred at 10:32 a.m. Tuesday at Route 17 and Main Street, partially on a ramp. Police said “minor injuries were reported among those involved in the accident.” Glastonbury Fire Department and multiple ambulances have also responded to the scene.

The bus was occupied by 33 students and six adults from the John Berry Elementary School in Meriden.

“Six juveniles were transported by EMS to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for complaints of pain. All other children from the bus were brought to CCMC via another school bus, at the request of the school’s principal,” state police said in a statement.

State troopers said their Initial investigation “found that the school bus was stopped at a traffic light when a tri-axle dump truck rear-ended the bus.”

The bus was operated by the New Britain Transportation Company and was taking the students on a field trip to the Connecticut Audubon Center in Glastonbury.

The identities of the drivers was not immediately available.

Update: 12:59 p.m.

Thirty-six elementary school students and six adults from Meriden on a field trip were involved in a school bus crash in Glastonbury and all of the children have been taken to area hospitals.

A New Britain Transportation Company school bus and a dump truck collided on Main Street, at Route 17. The bus was taking John Barry Elementary School students from Meriden to Connecticut Audubon in Glastonbury, bus company officials told NBC Connecticut.

The injuries are described as minor — involving whiplash and bruises.

Update: 12:10 p.m.

Fifth-grade students from John Barry School in Meriden were aboard a school bus involved in a crash Tuesday morning in Glastonbury, according to reports.

There were six students taken to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and three patients were headed to Hartford Hospital, ambulance officials confirmed. Other students were transferred to the hospital on another bus as a precaution, according to WFSB.

It is unclear the number of students aboard the bus — news have reported 21 and up to 32 students may have been passengers. Authorities on the scene described the injuries as non-life threatening, mostly whiplash and bruises, according to WFSB.

Students were on their way to the Connecticut Audubon Society for a science and nature trip, society officials confirmed, according to WFSB.

The crash occurred about 10:20 a.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Route 17 in Glastonbury, according to news reports.

Update: 11:35 a.m.

An unknown number of the 32 students aboard a New Britain Transportation Co. school bus are being treated for injuries after the bus was in a collision with a dump truck at the intersection of Main Street and Route 17 in Glastonbury, according to news reports.

The crash occurred about 10:20 a.m. and police said students were being treated for minor injuries at the scene and some were being taken to the hospital, according to WTIC.

Ambulances from Glastonbury and Manchester were called to the scene and because of the number of ambulances, the crash has been classified as a mass casualty incident, according to the WTIC report that can be found here.

Update: 11:22 a.m.:

A New Britain Transportation Company school bus and a truck collided on Main Street, at Route 17, and injuries have been reported.

Officials from the company said a truck hit the bus coming off the ramp, according to NBC Connecticut. Both Glastonbury and Connecticut State Police are on the scene, according to the report.

It’s not known how many people were injured; neither is the bus itinerary and where the students aboard are from.
