Students Back at Glastonbury School After Air Scare

An circulation problem made several students ill on Thursday.

GLASTONBURY, CT — A local elementary school was back open on Friday and the building is safe for students and staff after a scary situation a day earlier, Superintendent of Schools Alan Bookman said.

Things were back to normal on Friday at Eastbury Elementary School only after a Thursday that was anything but normal. At about 10:30 a.m., a air circulation malfunction made about a dozen students sick inside the building at 1389 Neipsic Road, officials said.

About 90 students were on risers in the cafeteria, participating in a choir activity, when they started to become light-headed, Bookman said. It was almost a chain reaction he said.

It turns out, the air was not circulating properly and, as the temperature rose outside, things started getting stuffy inside, Bookman said. Both fire department and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection testing teams determined there was nothing leaking, Bookman said.

A total of 10 students were taken to an area hospital directly from the school as it was being evacuated, Bookman said.

Bookman said the hospital reported treating two additional students, which meant they were brought there by parents or caregivers.

Classes and activities were back on schedule Friday and the air was circulating again, Bookman said.
