The center’s history began in 1980, when Glastonbury was in the process of acquiring 48 acres of open space directly behind the American Legion Hall. The project ultimately progressed in April of 1981, when the society considered using the American Legion Hall for their center space.

The space needed repairs and improvements to meet code requirements, however, and over $80,000 of funds, in-kind services and materials were donated by the regional community, according to the center’s website.

Finally, an Opening Day Celebration and Dedication was held on Oct. 2, 1982. Since then, the center has grown, adding a Discovery Room, Nature Store, library, outdoor classrooms and more.

Approximately 30,000 people visit the center every year.
