William J. Cooney, 93; World War II Prisoner of War; Insurance Company Retiree Who Lived in Glastonbury

Calling hours are scheduled for Thursday, May 21 with the funeral to be held on Friday, May 22.

William Joseph Cooney, 93, of Glastonbury and Marlborough, passed away on Sunday May 17, 2015, with his family by his side.

Bill was born in Far Rockaway, NY in 1921 and moved to Glastonbury in 1969 and later to Marlborough.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 where he served as the bombardier on a B-17. His plane was shot down on February 10, 1944, on a mission over Germany, and he spent over 18 months in Staling 1, a German prisoner of war camp. After being liberated by the Russians, Bill found the fastest way home to persuade Eleanor Walsh to be his wife. Eleanor accepted and they were married on October 13, 1945 and enjoyed 60 happy years together.

Bill will be remembered by all as a gentle, loving, kind and hard working man. He worked for Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company for most of his career. For many years after retirement, they enjoyed traveling around the world, dancing to the music of the most famous big bands, playing golf, bridge, and enjoying the beaches of Ocean City, Maryland and later, Vero Beach, FL.

Bill leaves his son William J Cooney, Jr and his wife Helen of the Villages, FL, John R Cooney of Burbank, CA, Brian E Cooney of Fort Collins, CO. and Catherine M Cooney of South Glastonbury, CT., his brother Robert A Cooney of Long Beach, CA. In addition, he leaves 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor and son, Kevin.

Bill’s family gratefully acknowledges the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. His family would also like to thank the staff of Glastonbury Health Care Center for the loving care provided to Bill.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury. Friends may call Thursday, May 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury.
