Driver Dies After Wrong-Way Collision With Truck In Glastonbury

A wrong-way driver died after colliding with a truck on Route 2 in Glastonbury on Christmas Eve, state police said.

GLASTONBURY, CT — A Christmas Eve crash involving a driver on the wrong side of Route 2 in Glastonbury left an Ohio man dead Monday morning, state police said.

The crash took place at 4:23 a.m. on Route 2 eastbound, just east of Exit 9, state police said. At one point the highway was completely closed, state police said.

A car was traveling the wrong way - westbound in the eastbound lanes — and it collided with a tractor-trailer, state police said.

At 8:30 a.m., the left two lanes were still closed. The right lane was open and the breakdown shoulder was being used to clear trasffic, state police said.

There was one occupant in the vehicle that hit the truck, state police said. Initial reports said the person suffered a "very serious injury" and later reports classified the injuries as fatal.

The driver was identified in a state police report as Christian Alvarez, 28, of Cleveland. He was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

The 49-year-old driver of the truck, operated by Bolus Freight Sytems out of Scranton, PA, suffered minor injuries, according to a report.
