Larch Hanson is the owner-operator of Maine Seaweed LLC, a small seaweed company that primarily harvests seaweed for food and medicine, together with lesser amounts for soil- and animal-supplementation. Come and learn from an expert who has been working within a five mile radius of his home on Gouldsboro Bay, located to the east of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor in Maine, for over four decades. Welcome! Pull up a chair. He’s a storyteller.

A little about Larch and his life’s work: At Maine Seaweed they adhere to strict harvest guidelines to ensure that undisturbed seaweed habitats are preserved as models for what each species really looks like. They work with apprentices over 3 year periods to teach future generations responsible harvesting and an understanding of the impact of their actions. Larch works in sync with nature and only harvests in the wild: "In short, I prefer to avoid dictating to kelp (or other seaweeds, for that matter) “where to grow”. I prefer to discover where kelp naturally prefers to grow, and make the effort to go there. That yields the highest quality.” At Maine Seaweed they also use wooden boats to enter the beds where they harvest the various seaweeds, so as not to risk a drop of fuel entering the environment. They pay great attention to each small detail of the process in order to preserve the integrity of their product and their community and their industry.
