Granby Public Works Director Retiring After More Than 40 Years

GRANBY, CT — Granby is searching for a new public works director as longtime department head Kirk Severance prepares to retire.

Severance's retirement is effective Sept. 14, according to information included in a recent Board of Selectmen meeting packet.

Town Manager Mike Walsh said Severance will be missed for his "professionalism, can-do attitude and good cheer."

Severance joined the Granby Public Works Department in 1984. He served as deputy director of operations for seven years before being appointed public works director in October 2014.

A Granby native, Severance grew up in town, attended Granby schools and has been involved with several local organizations.

The town posted the job opening on Aug. 20. The position carries a salary range of $100,000 to $140,000, and applications will be accepted until 4 p.m. Sept. 14.

The director oversees the town's roads and bridges, parks, buildings, vehicle fleet, landfill, sewer maintenance and contracted trash and recycling programs. The job also includes responsibility for the department's budget and capital projects.

Town officials revised the position to place more emphasis on construction project management and road improvements as Granby prepares for a December referendum involving five infrastructure bond questions.

Applicants are expected to have at least 10 years of public works experience, including seven years managing employees. The town is also seeking candidates with experience in road management and improvement projects.
