Behind the Counter: Dr. Energy Saver by MacNaughton Builders

It's been one year since Dr. Energy Saver opened in East Granby.

The business, owned by MacNaughton Builders, LLC, "works with homeowners throughout the Hartford County and Western Massachusetts area to save money on home heating bills by making the home energy efficient," according to a company press release.

Dr. Energy Saver gives free energy evaluations to customers in Connecticut and Massachusetts.

"We have spent the last year building our core business in the area and making homes more comfortable and efficient," Kirk MacNaughton, president of Dr. Energy Saver by MacNaughton Builders, said in the release.

The company has seen positive growth over the past year and contributed to the East Granby job market by adding staff, Reed MacNaughton, company manager, said in the press release.

Patch asked Mark Hann, the company's marketing manager, to fill us in about the business and here's what he had to say.

Patch: When did your business open? Is it family-run? Please list the names of the owners and your role with the company.

Hann: "It opened in February 2012 and family run by Kirk MacNaughton – president, and Reed MacNaughton – manager."

Patch: What services do you offer at your company?

Hann: "We offer free home energy valuations that help homeowners identify the air leaks in a home so they can be fixed and save money on their heating bills. We can repair all areas of the home that are identified as areas that leak air or lack proper insulation."

Patch: Why did you decide to open in East Granby and what made you interested in your field?

Hann: "East Granby offers a great community to have a business in with close access to all major highways and transportation hubs. Home energy efficiency is important to all homeowners and we saw a need to help them save money on energy bills."

Patch: Do you have a business mantra you live by?

Hann: "Dr Energy Saver by MacNaughton Builders – comfort and efficiency at home."

Patch: Can you tell us about the owners' business background? What did they do before opening this business? Have they owned other businesses in the past? Any notable awards?

Hann: "Kirk MacNaughton has been a builder in the area for over 30 years. Reed MacNaughton has an MBA from the University of Florida and has earned the highly esteemed title of Certified Energy Management Consultant."

Hann: "When Reed MacNaughton is not working he enjoys basketball, sailing and UConn sports."
