GRANBY-EAST GRANBY, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire. More great feats will be noted in the coming weeks.

Belmont University, Nashville TN

  • Carly DeMartino of Granby qualified for Belmont University's spring 2023 Dean's List. Approximately 49 percent of Belmont's 6,552 undergraduate students were named. Dean's List eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a quality grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below a C.

  • Amie Smith of East Granby was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Smith is among approximately 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Stonehill College, Easton MA

  • Taylor Whitehouse of East Granby was recently inducted into Lambda Epsilon Sigma, Stonehill College's honor society. The organization recognizes outstanding juniors and seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, provided evidence of a thirst for knowledge that goes beyond the classroom, contributed to the intellectual development of our community, and exhibited an ability to communicate effectively.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Lexington VA

  • Madison Kennedy, a native of Granby, was recently initiated into the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. The Society welcomed 1,869 new initiates from 78 universities during April 2023.
    Students initiated into the Society must be sophomores, juniors, seniors, or graduate/professional students in the top 35% of their class, demonstrate leadership experience in at least one of the five pillars, and embrace the ODK ideals. Fewer than five percent of students on a campus are invited to join each year.

Western New England University, Springfield MA

  • East Granby resident Emily Kowal, a junior biomedical engineering major, was featured in the Western New England University's episode of The College Tour, a groundbreaking series from Emmy-nominated producers Alex Boylan, Lisa Hennessy, and Burton Roberts, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Hosted by The Amazing Race winner Alex Boylan, The College Tour travels the country, highlighting the diverse landscape of colleges and universities and showcasing the many resources and opportunities available through the lens of current students. This exciting episode features ten outstanding student ambassadors for WNE from different corners of campus sharing their unique experiences and giving audiences a peek into their lives as Golden Bears. In her segment, Kowal shares her experience as a student-athlete and how it has allowed her to excel at Western New England. As a student-athlete in a demanding major, Kowal has learned the importance of time management and prioritization, allowing her to go above and beyond the classroom and outdoor trails. Since her first day in the College of Engineering, Kowal has been challenged to think like an engineer and gained hands-on classroom experience, which led to an internship in the summer of 2022.
