Championship Saturday Upcoming for Granby Girls

Both the field hockey and girls soccer teams won their semifinal matchups Tuesday to advance to state title contests Saturday.

Saturday will be a huge day for the girls' teams from Granby Memorial High School, as both the field hockey and soccer squads held off their opponents in semifinal action Tuesday to advance to the championship contests.

The field hockey team, seeded second in Class S, made a first-half goal by Heather Salter off a penalty corner stand up as the Bears held off No. 3 Immaculate 1-0 at Cheshire High School.

Granby will take on top-seeded North Branford Saturday at Wethersfield High School, at a time to be announced. The Bears are returning to the state title game for the first time since 2014, and seek their first championship since 2011.

Meanwhile, the girls soccer team, also seeded second in Class M, traveled to Naugatuck High School to face No. 19 Weston, and emerged with a 3-2 victory to earn a berth in the title game Saturday against No. 20 Berlin, at a site and time to be determined.

The Bear booters return to the finals for the first time since 2011, and are in search of their first title since 2001.

Unfortunately, the boys soccer team could not make it a championship Saturday trifecta, as the top seed in Class M fell to NCCC rival and No. 5 seed Suffield 4-1 Tuesday at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
