He grew up in Windsor and was a graduate of Windsor High School. He later attended Howard University and in his early career worked as a surgical technician at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford. In addition to owning his own business for a short time, Donald also worked for ADVO and IBM as a computer operator for many years. He retired from Food Share as a warehouse manager after a number of years and continued to work on Saturdays up until the weeks just prior to his passing.
Donald loved the outdoors and spent many enjoyable moments hunting, fishing, and gardening. His vegetable garden was abundant, and he shared his green thumb with his family and neighbors. Donald encouraged others to cultivate their own gardens and often did some of the work personally to ensure their success. He was a happy and social man who had a wealth of friends and acquaintances.
