East Granby Obituary: James Poor, 80

James C. Poor, 80 of East Granby, beloved husband of the late Jan Poor, passed away Friday, May 6, 2016 after a brief illness.

Son of the late George Washington Poor and Dorothy Cramphorn Poor, Jim was born on June 8, 1935 in Medford, MA. He spent much of his childhood in Southport Island, Maine where he attended primary school. Jim returned to Massachusetts and graduated from Medford High School. He went on to graduate from Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and later furthered his education by earning his MBA from The University of Hartford. Jim retired as the Vice President of Engineering from Spencer Turbine Company in Windsor after a rewarding 30 year-long career.

One of his greatest passions was car racing, and he was an honorary lifetime member of the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and a member of the Bonnet and Boot Sports Car Club in Wallingford, where he met his wife Jan. The happy couple married in 1965 and shared an incredible life together.

He is survived by four children, Rita Daves of Windsor, Rick Rome and his wife Lynn Despard of Enfield, Roger Rome of East Granby, and Randy Rome and his wife Kelly of Granby. He also leaves 9 adored grandchildren, Timothy and Jenna Daves and Melissa, Laura, Danielle, Joshua, Leah, Tyler, and Bryan Rome; two great-grandchildren, Chevelle and Levi; and a niece, Avis Craig of Crystal River, FL. In addition to his wife Jan, Jim was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Poor; a granddaughter, Tricia; and a sister, Leona Craig.

His funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., May 14, 2016 at The Lodge Community Chapel, 130 Deerfield Rd., Windsor. Family and friends may call on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. prior to the service at The Lodge. Carmon Funeral Home of Windsor has care of his arrangements. Burial will be private and in lieu of flowers, please honor Jim by making a donation to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, 555 Long Wharf Dr., New Haven, CT 06511.
