Forfeit Win Clinches Granby Football a Playoff Spot

The first postseason berth in Bears football history was assured when its next scheduled opponent was forced to forfeit.

From a winless debut season as a varsity program five years ago, Granby Memorial High School football has improved each year, until finally reaching the pinnacle Thursday.

An unusual situation involving Granby’s next scheduled opponent, Coginchaug, resulted in the Bears being awarded a forfeit victory in lieu of Saturday’s game.

Nick D’Angelo, Coginchaug’s head coach, and his entire staff resigned Tuesday in the midst of “a hostile environment” and false accusations, according to a story in the Middletown Press.

Left without coaches, the CIAC announced Thursday that Coginchaug would forfeit Saturday’s game.

The win pushes Granby’s record to 9-0, and ensures the school a spot in the Class S playoffs for the first time in school history.
