Longtime East Granby Schools Leader Passes Away

EAST GRANBY, CT — Dr. Alfred T. “Al” Lederman, a longtime superintendent of East Granby Public Schools whose name adorns the auditorium at East Granby High School, has died at age 91.

East Granby High School announced the loss, calling Lederman a dedicated education leader whose legacy will continue through the auditorium that bears his name and the lives he touched among students and staff.

Lederman served as superintendent of East Granby Public Schools for 17 years before retiring in 1994, according to his obituary. He died peacefully at his East Granby home on July 24.

Born in Albany, New York, Lederman earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany and a doctorate from the University at Buffalo. He also taught in Germany from 1961 to 1963, his obituary states.

Outside of education, Lederman was a supporter and former chairman of the East Granby Library Board. He also co-founded the Southington Youth Soccer League in 1975, helping introduce the sport to hundreds of young players.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joanne, as well as his children, grandchildren, great-grandchild and extended family.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St. in Granby. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Church in Granby, with burial at St. Bernard Cemetery in Tariffville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in Lederman’s memory to the East Granby Public Library.
