Granby Democratic Town Committee Scholarships Awarded

Granby Democratic Town Committee Scholarship Award

The Granby Democratic Town Committee (DTC) is pleased to share that recipients of the fifth annual DTC Scholarships are Kelly-Anne Moffa and Julianna Pestretto. The Granby DTC awarded two $1000 scholarships this year due to the increased support from community fundraising, and a generous matching gift by our U.S. Congressman, John Larson.

Both young women graduated from Granby Memorial High School this June as high honors students and both are college bound. Kelly-Anne will be attending the University of Connecticut and Julianna will be
attending Gettysburg College.

Granby DTC scholarships are awarded to deserving Granby High School seniors that demonstrate positive engagement in the political process and exemplify our mission of “Making Granby a Better Community”.
This year, applicants were asked to focus on The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States which reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” They completed an essay response to the question: How do you think this first amendment right affects you as a citizen of Granby on a daily
basis, and what is its importance to us as Granby citizens striving to make Granby a better community given the current political climate? Both recipients responded with informed, substantive, and insightful essays reflecting well on their Granby education and their civic awareness.
