Granby Obituary: Stuart Woodruff, 87

Condolences to his family and friends.

Stuart Cowan Woodruff passed away peacefully on Friday, February 26th at home in Granby.

He was born in Bronxville, NY on September 20, 1928. He was the son of the late Dr. Walter Stuart Woodruff and Euphemia (Gray Cowan) Woodruff. After graduating from The Millbrook School, Stuart joined the United States Marine Corps in 1946. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Corporal in October 1952. Stuart graduated from Trinity College (Hartford), and went on to earn a Master's Degree in English Literature from Harvard University and a PhD in English Literature from the University of Connecticut. He was a dedicated and excellent teacher with a particular focus on writing skills. He taught at Pomfret School, the University of Vermont, and Ethel Walker School, before retiring from Watkinson School in 1988. Stuart loved his family, his profession, a good book, Lake Champlain, his many dogs, and Tai Chi. In retirement, he continued to teach English as a Second Language (ESL).

Stuart is survived by his wife, Beverly, and his sons, James of Worcester, MA, David and his wife Anne of Cupar, Scotland, and Steve and his wife Denise of West Simsbury. He is also survived by Beverly's two children, Craig and Kim, his godchild Jan Fumire, and his daughter-in-law, Gretchen Woodruff. He was predeceased by two of his sons, Douglas and Peter, his former wife, Isobel Woodruff, and his sister, Evelyn Firth. Stuart leaves four loving grandchildren, Ben Woodruff, Meggie Woodruff, Brad Woodruff, and Allie Woodruff; and his devoted nieces, Carolyn Sutterfield and Ellen Fennell.

A private burial and memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
