GRANBY-EAST GRANBY, CT — Here are some recent notable accomplishments by local college students, as provided by readMedia Newswire. More great feats will be noted in the coming weeks.

Stonehill College, Easton MA

  • Taylor Whitehouse of East Granby was among 548 students to process at Stonehill College's 72nd Commencement on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Peter Ubertaccio, vice president for academic affairs, presided over the ceremony.

  • The United States Armed Forces now have more than 180 new officers. Eric Wilson of East Granby is one of the members of the Class of 2023 who accepted a commission into the Air Force. Held on Friday, May 5 during a joint commissioning ceremony, approximately 30 percent of the Class of 2023 accepted commissions into the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force. This year's joint ceremony was held in McAlister Field House. The ceremony included the now-officers reciting their oath, as well as having gold bars pinned on their uniforms by their sponsors. Following the ceremony, the commissionees gathered on Summerall Field where they received their first salutes as officers.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester MA

  • A total of 2,054 undergraduate students achieved the criteria required for WPI's spring 2023 Dean's List. The criteria for the WPI Dean's List differs from that of most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean's List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects. Local honorees are Caitlin Strzegowski of East Granby, class of 2023, majoring in environmental engineering, and Prior Waskan of Granby, class of 2026, majoring in mechanical engineering.
  • Caitlin Strzegowski of East Granby, a member of the class of 2023 majoring in environmental engineering, recently completed a senior thesis that is required of all graduating seniors as part of the university's distinctive project-based educational experience. The project, Stormwater Management & Design in Framingham, was Caitlin's Major Qualifying Project (MQP), one that is usually team-based and often focuses on very specific issues or needs of an organization that has partnered with the university to sponsor the student's work.
