How Historic are the Towns of Granby and East Granby?

A look at Granbys locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are over 90,000 sites in the United States listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Connecticut lays claim to 1,597 of them, with eight located within the town of Granby and six more in East Granby.

Between the two towns, East Granby has the distinction of having the earliest recognition and the most recent. Old Newgate Prison on Newgate Rd. was the first to achieve the national designation on Oct. 15, 1970. The most recent was the Whitfield Cowles House at 118 Spoonville Rd., designated on Apr. 8, 2014.

In Granby, the Rowe and Weed Houses at 208 Salmon Brook St. were the first to achieve the national designation on Jan. 18, 1978. The most recent was the West Granby Historic District, consisting of Broad Hill, Hartland, W. Granby and Simsbury Rds. and Day St. S., designated on May 1, 1992.
