In Memoriam: Former East Granby Principal John I. Biergel

John I. Biergel, a former longtime East Granby teacher and principal, died Tuesday in Springfield, Mass., according to his obituary in the Hartford Courant. He was 86 years old.

Biergel, who was predeceased by his wife Muriel, taught in East Granby for 37 years, mostly at the East Granby Junior-Senior High School. According to his obituary, Biergel was named East Granby Teacher of the Year in 1986.

Funeral services, according to the obituary, will be held Saturday at the Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home in Agawam, Mass. starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Springfield, Mass., at 10 a.m. The obituary states that burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chicopee, Mass. and calling hours will be held today, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
