New Year's Eve Explosives Tip Led To Granby Man's Conviction

GRANBY, CT — A Granby man pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal firearm charges stemming from an investigation that began with reports he had explosives and intended to detonate them on New Year's Eve, according to federal prosecutors.

Kyle Chambers, 31, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport to conspiracy to traffic firearms, unlawful possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm silencer.

The FBI received several tips on Dec. 30, 2024, concerning explosives at Chambers' Salmon Brook Road home and his reported plans for New Year's Eve, prosecutors said.

Chambers was arrested on state charges the following day after authorities searched the home. Investigators found dozens of firearms, ghost guns, machine gun conversion devices, ammunition, a 3D printer and materials that tested positive for explosive substances, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The investigation later found that Chambers sold guns to other people and regularly helped coordinate the purchase and sale of firearms and firearm-related materials, prosecutors said.

The firearm trafficking conspiracy charge carries a maximum prison term of 15 years. The machine gun and silencer charges each carry maximum sentences of 10 years.

Chambers has been detained since his arrest. His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 25.

The FBI and Granby Police Department investigated the case with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys John T. Pierpont Jr. and Justyn P. Stokely are prosecuting the case.
