As Practice Opens, a Look at Fall State Championships for Granby and East Granby

GRANBY-EAST GRANBY, CT — Thursday marks the official opening of practice for fall high school sports, and the first day gives every team hope and optimism that perhaps a state championship is in the cards.

A total of 33 Granby Memorial teams have captured state titles in fall sports in the past:

• field hockey (13): 2011 (S), 2010 (S), 2009 (S), 2007 (S), 2004 (S), 2003 (S), 2000 (S), 1985 (S), 1982 (S), 1980 (S), 1978 (S), 1974 (M), 1973 (open)
• boys soccer (11): 2005 (S), 2001 (S), 2000 (S), 1993 (S), 1991 (S), 1989 (S), 1987 (S), 1986 (S), 1985 (S), 1984 (S), 1978 (S)
• girls soccer (5): 2001 (S), 2000 (S), 1988 (S), 1987 (S), 1986 (S)
• girls cross country (3): 2009 (SS), 1975 (S), 1974 (M)
• girls volleyball (1): 2014 (M)

Just one East Granby team has won a state title in fall sports in past years:

• boys soccer (1): 1970 (S)
