Records Fall at State Boys Swimming Championships

MIDDLETOWN/WEST HARTFORD, CT — Three new state records were established, four other class standards were erased and some familiar names topped the team leaderboards as the CIAC conducted its annual boys swimming class championships Wednesday.

The Class LL and L meets were held at Wesleyan University, while the M and S championships took place at the Cornerstone Aquatics Center.

The new state records were all set at the LL meet, with Kieran Smith of Ridgefield shattering his own marks in the 200 freestyle (1:35.18) and 500 freestyle (4:21.37). Oliver Rus of Fairfield Prep established a new best of 1:54.25 in the 100 breaststroke.

New class records were set by Rus (LL, 50 freestyle, 20.24), Kevin Bradley of Norwalk/McMahon (LL, 1 meter diving, 572.10), Tyler Branscombe of South Windsor (L, 100 freestyle, 45.76) and Peter Sloan of New Canaan (L, 100 breaststroke, 56.77).

Greenwich won its sixth straight LL team title and 44th overall, while Weston won its sixth straight class title and 19th overall by capturing Class M for the second straight year. Brookfield took Class S for the second straight season, its 10th overall title, while Darien won Class L to snare its first title since winning Class S in 2001.

Next on the agenda is the State Open, which has been dominated by Greenwich for the last five years. The diving competition will take place Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Bulkeley High School in Hartford, while the swimming events are slated for Saturday at Yale University, starting at 2:30 p.m.
