[Update: Friday 9:45 a.m.] Some Businesses Open, Including Granby Pharmacy

As power slowly trickles into town, businesses begin to open their doors.

[Updated 9:45 a.m. Friday] R&R Power Equipment announced that it has generators in stock and is offering free delivery to Granby and East Granby.  The store is open from "sun up 'til dark, trying to help residents get the supplies they need to clean up the storm."

[Updated 4:45 p.m. Wednesday] Several stores located in the Stop & Shop plaza on Salmon Brook Street - T.J. Maxx, Rossetti's Wine and Liquors and Asian Grill - are all open for business.

In addition, the Farmington Valley YMCA is open and is offering showers.

[Updated Wednesday 2 p.m.] The lines for fuel have been reduced to next to nothing, thanks to the opening of the gas station at Cumberland Farms on Hartford Avenue.

In addition, the following businesses are open in the Granby Village Shops off Hartford Avenue:

  • The Center Spirit Shop has half power and is accepting all forms of payment, according to store manager Jim Farley;
  • ABC Pizza will be open for dinner, offering just large cheese and pepperoni pizzas until they run out, according to store manager Phil Arnold.
  • The Granby Chinese Restaurant is open, though they had to throw out a lot of food due to the power outage. The restaurant is open until 11 p.m.
  • Dr. Barry Walsh, Chiropractor, has been open since Monday, though on a reduced schedule. Walsh said that he opened until noon  Monday and Tuesday, until it got too cold. Today he is open until 5 p.m.
  • Granby Village Health is open, and is accepting cash and credit cards.

In addition to those stores, people were witnessed visiting the ATMs at Simsbury Bank and Windsor Federal Savings on Hartford Avenue.

[Updated Wednesday 12:30 p.m.] Power is back in portions of the center of Granby. The Food Bag Citgo station on Hartford Avenue is open, and other businesses are planning on opening as soon as they regain power.

The Salmon Brook Veterinary Hospital on Salmon Brook Street is open for vererinary care, grooming and boarding.

The Starbucks on Hartford Avenue, as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, was not open, but check in

Geissler's and Stop & Shop in Granby are both open, as are the businesses listed below.

Lite N Up on Hartford Avenue is also open.

[Original story posted and updated Tuesday] There may be no power for residents yet, but some businesses are open in Granby.

Stop & Shop is operating off a large generator and its shelves are stocked with the essentials, except that the store is out of ice.

At Geissler's and Granby Pharmacy, people were seen shopping in the dark. [Update Tuesday 2:05 p.m. Geissler's hooked up a generator and lights are now on]

"We've got everything except perishables," said Geissler's manager Jim Guthrie, who added that the store would be open until 5 p.m. "We have hot coffee."

Stop & Shop and Geissler's were both accepting cash, checks and credit cards. Geissler's was not accepting debit cards, however.

Granby Pharmacy is filling and refilling prescriptions, and taking cash only, according to pharmacist Colleen Keating.

The CVS pharmacy is open for people to pick up prescriptions that were dropped off prior to the storm and is accepting cash and checks only.

Liquor World in the Geissler's Shopping Center is open "until the sun goes down," according to John Lira, store manager. The store is accepting cash only.

"People are so happy to see that someone is open," he said.

Similarly, Family Hardware is also open until sunset, according to manager Peter Juszczynski.

The hardware store was running low on C and D batteries, and was out of generator plugs and propane.

Beman Hardware in Granby Center was open until noon today and is stocked with batteries, small propane units and flashlights.

"We just got in a shipment, but by the end of the day we will probably be out of the small propane (units)," said store employee Travis Anderson.

The post office downtown was also open.

In East Granby, the store portion of Sam's Convenience is open, though the gas pumps remained on their hooks, as the town was still without power as of noon Tuesday.

The Liquor Cabinet on Route 20 in East Granby was also open today, with cash and credit cards being accepted.
