  • On Aug. 19, 2016, a routine well-being check for an elderly East Granby man ended with negative results. The next day, Trooper Mahar returned to the man’s residence to conduct a followup check and met with Mr. Hubbard, a friend of the man. Trooper Mahar and Mr. Hubbard gained entry into the residence through a basement hatchway and found the residence filled with boxes and debris. They heard a low groan in an area of the basement where the first floor had collapsed. Trooper Mahar and Mr. Hubbard located the victim in a corner which had a low ceiling and dirt floor. They moved the victim to a safer location due to the poor structural condition of the house. The man was breathing and conscious, but unable to speak. He was immediately transported to a local hospital; it is estimated he was trapped in the basement for at least 24 hours. Trooper Mahar earned the Medal for Lifesaving; Mr. Hubbard earned the Commissioner’s Recognition Award.
