Victim Identified in Fatal Granby Collision

A man leading a farm animal was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday evening, police said.

GRANBY, CT — Police have identified the victim of a fatal collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle on East Street Tuesday evening.

The pedestrian has been identified as Matthew Smith, 55, of Granby. He was leading an ox between fields at the time of the collision. The animal was also struck but not seriously injured, Capt. William Tyler said.

The operator and sole occupant of the vehicle, a 2006 Volkswagen, was Roger Newton, 17, of Granby. He remained at the scene following the collision, Tyler said.

The incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed. The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Squad is assisting the Granby Police Department, Tyler said.
